The Miracle Of The Jordan

Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God. 10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.1)Joshua 3: 9-13

What was really the miracle of the Jordan?  Many persons tend to focus on the fact that the Israelites crossed over on dry ground – but was that really it?  Now do not get me wrong – crossing the Jordan while it overflowed its banks on dry ground at that is no small feat.  We will see that later on Elijah and Elisha did just that.

Let’s begin at the Red Sea.  That was a crossing!! I mean the Red Sea parted – and Israel crossed on dry ground!! The sea!! Not a river, the Sea!  Therefore, upon arriving at the banks of the Jordan, the Israelites expected that they would cross the Jordan.  Why would I say this?  Do you remember what they did when they came upon the Red Sea.  They complained and were afraid.  This time they did not complain and that is what told me they expected to cross.  After all, what is the Jordan compared to the Red Sea?  If God could part the Red Sea and cause dryness on the seabed, why couldn’t He do the same for a river?  But what about that waterfall coming off the mountain?

The Jordan river flows off a mountain into the river bed below – the real focus of the miracle of the Jordan is that the flow of the water stopped in mid-air.  The fact is that many times God does something great for us and when we face a similar situation, we tend to believe that God won’t be able to do it again.  I heard once about a lady who believed God for $5 million dollars and when she needed busfare she was fretting.

God is able to prevent your obstacles, weights, hindrances from weighing you down so that you can cross over into what He has destined for you?  Is the obstacle you face a Red Sea or a Jordan?  God is able to to take you across both.  He is in control and is very able.
