Now Faith Is

Firstly, what is faith? The Bible defines it in HEBREWS 11:1 Now Faith is substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen

The New American Oxford Dictionary defines it as complete trust or confidence in someone or something or strong belief in God or doctrines of a religion based on a spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

The most interesting word from the dictionary definition is apprehension.  That word means understanding or grasp.  Its origin is from the Middle English and late Latin word apprehendere which means to seize or to grasp.  Therefore having a spiritual apprehension about something would mean that your spirit is able to seize upon a truth, a promise of God and seeing the expected end, cause you to believe in what you know to be true in your spirit, regardless of what is happening around you to the contrary. (Pause for a Hallelujah!)  This is what is meant by the evidence of things not seen. Evidence is proof.  That means if faith is the evidence of things not seen, it means you have proof of the thing before it is seen because you already see it, are able to visualize it in your spirit.  When it comes into being you are not surprised because you already saw it. (This is another great HALLELUJAH moment).

The substance of things hoped suggests tangibility. Anything that is tangible, can be touched and handled, so your hope is a very tangible thing, not a pipe dream. Substance the real physical matter of which a person or thing exists and has a solid tangible appearance, or the quality of having a solid basis in reality or fact.  Its origin is from the Latin words substantiabeing essence and substant standing firm,  from the verb substare.  (This is where we shabach the Lord).

Essence something that exists, a spiritual entity.  Therefore faith can be defined as the confidence in tangible spiritual thing based on a truth of God that I have grasped, and have proof of because I can visualize it happening, despite circumstances that exist that is telling me otherwise.
