There are some seeds that can stay in the soil, not showing any signs of growth until the conditions are right. So it is in the realm of the spirit. The enemy plants a seed and waits……
The enemy always leaves for a season. He then comes back after this season to see if what he has planted is still there.
Let’s revisit your scene of temptation. When you come back to work the next day there is a little niggling in your mind about the pencil you took, yet you decide not to say anything about it. You have just watered the seed.
As time moves on, you become promoted. You are now in charge of the petty cash for the company. You have access to the company’s resources. One day your child needs some prints of some animals for homework. You do not choose to use the internet cafe next door during your lunch time. Instead you trawl the internet on the company’s time, print out the pictures on the company’s colour printer, using the company’s paper, and you think nothing of it. The enemy comes to inspect his plant and sees that it is doing well.
Further on in your career, you are in charge of the petty cash, and one day you are short of bus fare. You “borrow” some money, just enough for your bus fare, reasoning that you can replace it before reconciliation time. After all you are expecting some money that is due to you tomorrow anyway. The plant is growing nicely and the gardener is pleased.
As time moves on you have developed the habit of “borrowing” from the petty cash whenever you run short, and you have not been caught yet. You become emboldened. You start to believe that you have everything under control and you are too smart to be caught. Deception and pride have just walked through the door, and set up camp under the shade of the plant which is now a small tree.
As more uninvited guests come through your door, the house becomes crowded. The conditions become unbearable. You are now under pressure at work. You are in a state of panic, auditors are coming. You ask yourself, “how did I get here?” You decide to confess to your boss and throw yourself on his/her mercy. As you speak you find yourself confessing about the pencil that you took so long ago, and maybe wondering why you are even mentioning that. What if your boss responds by saying “I knew from the first day you took the pencil, and I have been waiting for you to come to me”
This is not likely to happen in the natural but this is how Jesus waits for us to come to repentance. He knows where all the seeds are planted. As children of the Living God we can approach the seat of mercy with boldness, where a loving God sees us through the blood of His Son. His Son is at His right hand making intercession for us daily. As we come to repentance, He dispenses forgiveness and remembers our sins no more.
The gardener is not pleased anymore because he knows that everything he had carefully planted is about to be uprooted. He will try to tell you that what you have done is unforgivable. That you are too filthy to stand before God. Don’t let him fool you. The Blood of Jesus is available to all who will accept it.
In Revelations 3:20, He says “Hear I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come and eat with him, and he with me”
Aren’t You going to invite Him in?
